Wine Books: Remington Norman

A very knowledgeable author, very strong on the Rhône Valley.

What a stunning book. Of reasonable weight, with glossy pages and good photography, this book initial suggests itself as a superficially attractive coffee table book. Take a closer look, however, and you will be seduced by Norman's informative write-ups of the important producer's of the Rhône Valley. He deals with the producers appellation by appellation, starting in Côte Rotie and progressing South. This in itself would be sufficient, but Norman then takes on the producers of Rhône-like wines from regional France. This is before dealing with the New World producers, most obviously the growers of Shiraz in Australia, but also California and South Africa. This book feels a little like a personal odyssey, as I have visited many of the Rhône producers Norman features, from the obvious (eg. Clos de Papes), to the less so (eg. Chaboud), but it would serve as an guide for anyone serious about Rhône wines.
