Chateau de Valflaunés

The proprietor here is Fabian Reboul and, amazingly, his first vintage was as recent as 1998. This is not belied by the superb quality of the wines coming out of this estate. He's not new to winemaking, however, as he previously gained experience in New Zealand and Oregon before returning to his home, the Languedoc. Here he took some suitable land from his family, and purchased equipment and barrels from Chateau Ausone in Bordeaux.

The wines include several excellent cuvees. The Cuvée Esperance may be regarded as the entry level cuvee. It is a blend of 80% Carignan, with 10% each of Grenache and Syrah. A step up is the Cuvée Hardiesse. Here we leave Carignan behind, as the blend is 90% Grenache with 10% Syrah, with some time in new oak. Sitting at the top of the tree is Cuvée Favorite, a 100% Syrah cuvee which sees 16 months in new French oak. They are attractively priced in view of the quality, but prices are likely to rise in future vintages. (29/12/03)

1998

Chateau de Valflaunés Coteaux du Languedoc Pic Saint Loup 'Favorite' 1998: A deep, glossy colour, and an impressive nose. Intense blueberry and blackberry fruits lead he way, but with plenty of smouldering garrigue herbs, stone and organic aromas, and later more meaty, gamey notes. No disappointment on the palate, with intense and interesting flavours, backed up by ripe, creamy tannins which coat the mouth on the finish. Plenty of extract yet balanced, elegant, simply gliding across the palate. Brilliant wine. 17/20 (December 2003) Label
