Domaine de la Prose

There was little activity here until 1990, when this property was purchased by Alexandre and Patricia de Mortillet. To what little existed - just a few vines and a shed or two - they added a new house and a smart cellar, which meant they could make more wine of their own rather than send the grapes to the local co-operative. Time has already moved on though, as the winemaker today is of the next generation - Bertrand de Mortillet, who tool the helm in 1995. He destems 100%, ferments in wood and avoids temperature control - preferring the extraction and colour that comes from a prolonged, warm alcoholic fermentation.

De Mortillet offer a white (Grenache Blanc and Rolle), a rosé (Syrah, Grenache, Cinsaut) and several reds. His basic wine is Grenache and Syrah in equal proportions. A step up is Les Embruns (100% Syrah), the name of which is derived from brumes, a local name for the salty sea fogs of the Mediterranean. Top of the tree is the Grande Cuvée which is Syrah (80%) and Grenache (20%) and sees some time in oak. In addition he has made a late harvest Grenache Noir. (15/12/03)

2000

Domaine de la Prose Coteaux du Languedoc St Georges d'Orques 'Embruns' 2000: A good colour, with more depth than the standard cuvée. Initially some animal and metallic notes, but these soon give way to a rich vein of blackberry fruit with crushed rocks and hot, roasted garrigue herbs. An immediate fleshy, creamy texture on entry, but with plenty of ripe, slightly spicy tannins and good acidity beneath it all. Alongside the black fruit are notes of game and liquid stone. This is delightful stuff, which offers pleasing, forward fleshy texture and rich fruit but structure, grip and terroir notes as well. 16.5/20 (December 2003) Label

1999

Domaine de la Prose Coteaux du Languedoc St Georges d'Orques 1999: A good, rich colour, but quite transparent. Some stewed, macerated fruit on the nose at first, with some pepper and cloves. Later a touch of volatile acidity becomes apparent. Full, rounded fruit on the palate, with a warm, almost creamy texture - helped by 14% alcohol. Not much tannin but some nice grip. For current drinking. 15.5/20 (December 2003) Label
