Château Coupe Roses

Château Coupe Roses is a long established domaine located in La Caunette, high on the cliffs in the more north-easterly part of the Minervois appellation. It has been in the hands of the de Calvez family since 1614, but Françoise de Calvez and her husband, Pascal Frissant, have only been in control since 1987. Together they have revitalised the estate, with a doubling of vineyard area, a new cellar and a move away from the dreaded en vrac to an almost entirely bottled production.

There are no shortage of different cuvées produced, including red and white Minervois. The red cuvées are of the most interest, and these include Les Plots, a typical Mediterranean blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, Cuvée Orience which is Syrah, Cuvée Prestige which is Grenache and Cuvée Granaxa which is also predominantly Grenache. There is also a Minervois rosé Bastides de Coupe Roses, as well as late harvest wines and a selection of vin de pays. (14/6/04)

2000

Château Coupe Roses Minervois 'Granaxa' 2000: An attractive hue, suggestive of Grenache, with a moderate depth of colour. The nose is lovely, with sweet cherry and gamey notes, together with nuances of smoke and leather. Appropriate concentration on the palate, with a rounded mouthfeel, nice structure of soft tannins and a little extract. There is real character in this wine, a warm Grenache typical of the south, but packed with appropriate flavour. 15/20 (June 2004)
