Domaine Clavel

Domaine Clavel is run by Pierre Clavel. His father, Jean Clavel, was once director of the Syndicat des Coteaux du Languedoc, and consequently an influential figure in the region. Despite this the family owned no vineyards until Pierre established himself at what was called Mas Calage, but is now Domaine Clavel. The estate is located in Méjanelle, one of the five communes surrounding Montpellier that make up the subregional zone of the Coteaux du Languedoc called Grès de Montpellier.

There is an extensive range of wines produced here, bottled under the Coteaux du Languedoc appellation rather than any communal or subregional zone. Cascaille is a white Coteaux du Languedoc using Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Rolle. There is a rosé, made by the saignée method, called Mescladis. Production is limited to just 350 cases per annum. It is the reds, however, which provide the greatest interest. Le Mas is a simple cuvée intended for early drinking. Les Catalognes may well qualify as one of the most unusual wines of the Languedoc, made using a vineyard blend of Carignan, Cinsaut, Muscat and Pinot Gris! Les Garrigues is made in a more typical Languedoc style, whereas the flagship wine La Copa Santa is predominantly Syrah with a dash of Grenache. (2/2/04)

2001

Domaine Clavel Coteaux du Languedoc 'Les Garrigues' 2001: A delicious, deep, opaque yet vibrant and youthful red-black hue. Lots of slightly spicy and herbal, sweet and chewy fruit on the nose. First thing to notice on entry is an appealing, rounded, almost creamy texture, although it hardens up on the midpalate. This is thanks to some firm, dry tannins and acidity. Lots of extract and pure, super-ripe summer berry fruit. Delicious stuff for current drinking. 17/20 (February 2004) Label

2000

Domaine Clavel Coteaux du Languedoc 'Copa Santa' 2000: A beautiful colour, a dark red-black hue. Dark roasted berry fruits on the nose, with nuances of cashew nuts and smoky oak. What's immediately apparent on entry is weight, texture and balance - an impressive and infrequently found combination. Although pleasingly creamy, this wine glides across the palate thanks to correct acidity. Firm, ripe, delicious tannins. Dark berry fruits swirled in cream, and a firm serious, tannin-influenced finish. Drink now, or leave in the cellar for a few years. 18+/20 (February 2004) Label
