Mas des Bressades
Mas de Bressades is a leading domaine in the Costières de Nimes. It is run by the Marés family, having been established by father Roger Marés in the 1970s. Marés had owned the property since 1965, but only got around to replacing the fruit and almond trees with vines in 1977. His son, Cyril Marés now looks after the property, having first gained valuable experience working for Chalone in California and Bruno Prats in Chile. The vineyards cover 22 hectares in all, with a wide variety of varieties planted, including Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon alongside the more usual 'improving varieties'.
This is a modern, quality orientated operation, just the ticket to encourage other producers in this appellation to raise their game. There is a new cellar, built in 1998, which houses a mixture of new and old oak barrels. There are a number of cuvées produced here, including some interesting barrel-fermented white wines, but the two main red cuvées are Cuvée Excellence, a Syrah-dominated blend, and Cuvée Tradition, a traditional although unoaked southern blend of Syrah and Grenache. Mas de Bressades - Tasting Notes
Mas de Bressades Cuvée Excellence Costières de Nimes 2001: A Syrah
dominated blend from this estate. It has a lovely depth of red-purple colour
which is quite dense. The nose is full of sweet berry and brambly fruit, with a
meaty, slightly sweaty, tarry, earthy complexity. Similarly impressive on the
palate, which has a wealth of sweet, ripe, opulent fruit, with a floral and
tarry edge. A big and showy texture with fine, ripe tannins and firm acidity
giving a lovely, fluid balance. Good, firm, fruit preserve finish. This is
impressive stuff. 16.5/20 (April 2004)
