Lawson's Dry Hills Gewurztraminer (Marlborough) 1999:
Gewurztraminer is one of many grapes which, unlike Sauvignon Blanc and
Chardonnay, have failed to crack the international wine scene, and the grape
remains largely confined to Alsace. This is one New World example worth seeking
out however. It has an expressive nose, loaded with ripe lychees, orange peel and
blossom, and some aromas of spice. It is rich and full of fruit on the palate,
with a classic Gewurztraminer texture, with quite good balancing acidity. Some
peppery spice notes. Strong finish and a surprisingly good length. This is exceptional quality and
value, as I recall many more disappointing wines from Alsace at this price point.
Very good.
