Cà del Pipa Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Le Vigne 1997: Deep, opaque wine with a fine sediment suggesting limited filtration at most. Powerful, open nose, which has aromas of chocolate, high toned blackberry fruit with a raisin edge and smouldering hickory. A wonderfully fat and rich texture, but with fresh, slightly astringent acidity keeping it in check. Plenty of structure and grip alongside the fruit, and gorgeous length. Should cope well with five years in the cellar thanks to that acidity. 17.5+/20 (31/3/03)
