Massimo Romeo

This is a family concern which is now producing good wines, largely due to the efforts of Massimo Romeo. For over a decade Romeo has worked the estate, which is located in Gracciano in Montepulciano. It has expanded to its current size of 5 hectares, largely high altitude vineyards on gravel soils. Massimo Romeo has always preferred traditional, indigenous grapes over international varieties, and as a consequence Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot have been eschewed in favour of little-known vines such as Mammolo and Pulcinculo. These are planted up together with the more widespread Sangiovese, Malvasia and Canaiolo. Production is limited, with total output barely exceeding 1000 cases.

The range of wines include Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva dei Mandorli, as well as a straight Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. There is also a Vin Santo di Montepulciano. (27/1/03)

1998

Romeo Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva dei Mandorli 1998: A moderate amount of sediment, just enough to require a decant. Still a fairly youthful garnet red at the centre, but with a tinge of orange pink maturity appearing at the rim. Good aromas on the nose - mineral and stone influenced fruit, dark cherries with a subtle edge of oak. Medium bodied, with a good presence of fruit on the palate, but an austere combination of firm, spicy tannins and strong acidity. There is a pleasing silky texture underneath it all, but for the wine to really show well it needs food. Needs another two to three years in the cellar. 16.5+/20 (January 2003) Label
