Marcarini

Established during the nineteenth century, Marcarini have established a reputation for turning out top quality Barolo and also Dolcetto. The estate was founded by Giuseppe Tarditi, and today is run by Anna Marcarini Bava.

For some time the top cuvée has been Barolo Brunate, but there is also now Barolo La Serra, an elegant wine made in a lighter style. Marcarini are responsible for one of Italy's top Dolcettos, namely the Dolcetto Boschi di Berri. This is produced from vines aged over one hundred years on average, planted on their own rootstocks. Other wines include Dolcetto d'Alba Fontanazza, Langhe Nebiolo Lasarin and a Barbera d'Alba Ciabot Camerano, among others. (28/7/03)

Marcarini - Tasting Notes

The following wine was tasted in July 2003. Click to locate stockists.

Marcarini Barolo La Serra (Piedmont) 1997: The colour has some maturity, and a moderate density. Great interest on the nose, which has perfumed, mature, sweet, wood-spicy fruit aromas, with a macerated edge, intertwined with more complex notes of game, leather, violets and more. On the palate it is full and sweet, but with good balance, upset only by a seam of tannins that still runs throughout the wine. Lovely fluidity. Roasted-macerated fruit with more secondary flavours. Delicious and complex, but needs to lose the tannin. Try again in two to three years. Very good. Label
