Costanti

This is a significant producer for Montalcino, having had a presence in the region since at least 1555. not only in terms of quality of wine produced, but also for the advances they have made. For instance, in the early 1960s they were one of the first to begin bottling their wines themselves. The family-owned estate is currently under the supervision of Andrea Costanti, who, despite his youth, coped well with taking over control of the estate from his Uncle, Count Emilio, in 1983. He runs the business with oenological advice from consultant Vittorio Fiore.

There are two vineyards, the relatively high altitude Colle al Matrichese and the lower Calbello. Unsurprisingly the range of wines is small. An elegant, perfumed, complex Brunello, which ages well; a structured Rosso, impressive for the DOC; and, since 1998 a Merlot Cabernet blend, in a 7:3 ratio, called Ardingo. (9/12/02)

Costanti - Tasting Notes

The following wine was tasted in December 2002. Click to locate stockists.

Costanti Brunello di Montalcino 1997: Nice deep garnet-red hue. An expressive nose at first, with plenty of dark, ripe, crunchy fruits, but also powerful floral aromas. There's a tobacco and smoke edge which suggests oak. Medium bodied, smooth and elegant on entry. On the midpalate there is still evident structure - supple but firm and spicy tannins, and strong acidity. Some notes of ripe, red fruits, smoke and rose-petal tobacco mirroring the nose. The tannins give a spicy feel to the finish. Very good, potentially excellent. Label
