Cą del Pipa

The Cą del Pipa wines are produced by the Michelle Castellani estate, which is now run by Michelle's son, Sergio Castellani. Sergio is a star winemaker in the Valpolicella Classico region. Despite the accolades bestowed upon this estate, which include a tre bicchieri award from Gamberro Rosso for his Recioto, the wines were not exported until 2001.

There are a range of wines produced, including several cuvees of Amarone della Valpolicella, ripasso method wines including a straight Valpolicella, but also more unusual IGT blends such as Corvina blended with ripasso Cabernet Sauvignon. Of course, there is also the Recioto della Valpolicella, as well as a Cabernet Sauvignon IGT 'Capitel' and also a Soave Classico 'Colle Olivi'. (31/3/03)

Cą del Pipa - Tasting Notes

The following wine was tasted in March 2003. Click to locate stockists.

Cą del Pipa Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Le Vigne 1997: Deep, opaque wine with a fine sediment suggesting limited filtration at most. Powerful, open nose, which has aromas of chocolate, high toned blackberry fruit with a raisin edge and smouldering hickory. A wonderfully fat and rich texture, but with fresh, slightly astringent acidity keeping it in check. Plenty of structure and grip alongside the fruit, and gorgeous length. Should cope well with five years in the cellar thanks to that acidity. Very good, excellent potential. Label
