Boscarelli

The Boscarelli estate was purchased by Ippolito and Paolo Ferrari, just over thirty years ago in 1962. Sadly Ippolito died in 1983, but this tragic event did not stop Paolo from fashioning Boscarelli into one of the leading estates in Montepulciano. She employed the services of oenologist Maurizio Castelli, and with the involvement of sons Luca and Nicoḷ the future of the family business seems secure. There are 13 hectares planted up, predominantly Sangiovese, although there are small areas of international varieties. The operation is quality orientated - high density planting, replanting using clones of high quality, modernisation and re-equipping of the cantina, and so on.

These are stylish wines; structured and age-worthy, and yet approachable young. They are thought by many to be among the best in the region, and from my experience I would agree. There is a standard Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, as well as a cru Vino Nobile del Nocio, and a 100% Sangiovese barrique-aged super-Tuscan Boscarelli. (3/2/03)

1999

Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 1999: A deep garnet red colour with a residual touch of purple. Lovely nose, which although dumb at first evolves over several hours to reveal aromas of violets, charcoal and dense black fruits. Rich texture on entry. Through the endpalate the tannins and acidity sit with the plentiful fruit, adding a note of austerity but overall it has balance. Quite elegant, and delicious. Needs two years in the cellar. 17.5+/20 (February 2003) Label
