Austria 2005: Conclusion

="AustrianWith yesterdays new thumbnail introduction to the wines of Austria, my little series looking at some reputable Austrian winemakers has finished. It's been a worthwhile series, confirming my limited prior experiences with the handful of Austrian wines that I have drunk for pleasure at home. This series took in some of the grand sweet wines of Austria, as well as the dry, food-friendly Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners with which Austria is reaffirming itself. My only regret is that I didn't entitle the series Austria 2006, as the files now already look dated. Never mind. Next I must get around to my updated Chianti profiles, following my recent trip to Siena and Chianti country, and the impressive Roussillon tasting I attended not so long ago. Hopefully I will have both of these published long before the year is through, so I should have no such dating difficulties!

After completing brief series such as this one on The Winedoctor I do find it valuable to look back and see if what I have tasted has been sufficiently impressive to drive me to purchase the wines for my own consumption and pleasure. With Austria, the answer would undoubtedly be yes, were it not for one niggling problem; the simple matter of prices. These are not, when one looks beyond the most basic, introductory cuvées, bargain basement wines. They come at a price, and this is true whether one is looking at purchasing the fabulous and renowned sweet wines from the likes of Kracher, or the dry whites from Bründlmayer and company. This puts the wines at a disadvantage compared to my usual sources for such wines, such as the Loire Valley, Sauternes and Alsace. I don't think my buying will change significantly, but I will look more favourably on these wines should they come my way at the right price. Now, where's that sale list....? (8/2/06)
