Wunsch & Mann
Wines have been produced under the label of Wunsch & Mann since the 1940s, although the family behind the firm have been involved in winemaking in Alsace since the late eighteenth century. They are not generally regarded as one of the top flight producers in Alsace, but past experience suggests that this may be a source of good value Grand Cru wines.
Based in Wettolsheim, the firm produce a number of cuvees, including some sourced from two local Grands Crus. The generic cuvees include the Cuvee St Remy Gewurztraminer, which has a good reputation, as well as a Cuvee du Roi Clovis Riesling, other varietal cuvees and also a Cremant d'Alsace. Vines on two Grand Cru sites are exploited, at Steingrubler and Hengst, and wines produced under the 'Collection Joseph Mann' label can be very good. Particularly noteworthy is the Riesling from Steingrubler, although the examples from Hengst offer good value when compared with the wines of other producers from this site. (11/12/01)

Wunsch & Mann - Tasting Notes
Wunsch & Mann
Riesling Cuvée du Roi Clovis 1996: A very
typical Riesling colour, fairly pale golden wine with a
green hue. The nose has some reductive, rubbery aromas at
first, although after a short while these seem to blow
off, leaving a classic nose of petrol, smoke and limes.
The palate is very dry, with sharp acidity cutting
through a deep layer of rounded lime fruit and blossom.
As the wine develops in the glass the texture takes on a
degree of richness, and this is most evident on the
finish which has a great burst of almost creamy fruit.
15/20 (December 2001)

Wunsch & Mann Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Hengst 1996: A fairly pale
yellow wine. The nose is classic Gewurztraminer, however, with aromas of gently
fried bacon mingled with candle wax and honeyed fruit. Quite a rich texture on
the palate, with a fair degree of residual sugar. There are some pleasant and
typical Gewurztraminer flavours, pears, pineapple with a smoky bacon and honey
edge. They are not abundant however, and the palate does seem a little
characterless for a Grand Cru wine. Nevertheless there is a clean finish with a
considerable length. 15.5/20 (October 2001) Label
