Reading Wine Labels: Alsace

Zind Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Hengst Grand Cru 1993 label image

This Alsace wine is from a Grand Cru vineyard, as prominently stated at the top of the label. The phrase depuis 1658 tells us that the Humbrechts have been making wine in Alsace since 1658, although Domaine Zind Humbrecht was only formed by marriage in 1959. Beneath the domaine's crest is the name of the vineyard in large type, Hengst. The name of the village where Hengst is located, Wintzenheim, is presented in quite small type as it is of little importance. The grape is Gewurztraminer, Alsace being the only French appellation to use varietal labelling. The vintage, 1993, is also clearly defined. At the foot of the label there is plenty of information about the producer, father and son team Léonard et Olivier Humbrecht, who are based in Turckheim, Haut-Rhin, France.
