Reading Wine Labels: Champagne

Krug 1985 Vintage Champagne label image

Only wines from the Champagne region of France are legally permitted to have the word Champagne on their label. The Champenois are fiercely protective of the word, and are vigorous in pursuing, through the courts, those that use it incorrectly. This is a Vintage wine, meaning that it has been made from grapes grown in a single year, in this case 1985. The producer is Krug, without doubt one of the top Champagne houses, and they are based in Reims. It is a Brut wine, indicating that it is quite dry.
