Reading Wine Labels: Burgundy (Côtes de Nuits)

Leroy Clos de Vougeot label image

Most prominent on this label is the appellation, Clos de Vougeot. This vineyard has Grand Cru status, and this is stated underneath in smaller type. Grand Cru wines from Burgundy are not required to state the village of origin (which in this case is Vougeot), but all lesser wines (Premier Cru and village wines) are. The label also states Mis en bouteille au Domaine, indicating a domaine-bottled wine. The vignerons name, Leroy, is clearly stated. Mme Leroy is one of the top names of Burgundy. The label declares her as Propriétaire à Vosne-Romanée, Côte d'Or, France, telling us that she is based in the village of Vosne-Romanée.
