Reading Wine Labels: Vintage Port
From the Port House of Fonseca comes this Vintage Port from 1991. Port vintages are generally declared three or four times each decade, depending on the quality of the wines produced that year. In non-declared years (Fonseca chose to declare 1992 in favour of 1991), if quality is sufficient some vintage wine will still be made, and Fonseca call this wine Guimaraens. Vintage Port must be aged in oak for at least two years, and indeed this label tells us that the wine was Bottled in 1994. Beneath this there is some information regarding the producer, revealing that Fonseca, like all the top Port houses, have offices in Oporto.
