Reading Wine Labels: Super-Tuscan, Italy

Antinori Solaia Vino da Tavola di Toscana 1990 label image

Super-Tuscans are the result of quality-minded Italian winemakers working outside bureaucratic Italian wine regulations. These wines sell on their reputation rather than on their classification, so it's no surprise that the name of the wine, Solaia, is printed so prominently. Behind this is printed the name of the wine producer responsible, Marchesi Antinori, who resides in Firenze. The vintage, 1990, and Antinori's crest are clearly displayed. Down the left hand margin is the wines classification, Vino da Tavola di Toscana. This is a lowly table wine classification, but it is a result of grapes used and winemaking practices rather than lack of quality. On the right the phrase Imbottigliato in San Casciano tells us where the wine was bottled.
